MAIN DISHES

HUNGARIAN PORK AND CABBAGE (Sekely) Traditional

  • pork steaks, cubed
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • salt and pepper
  • 2 tsp. paprika
  • 1 head cabbage, shredded
  • 1-2 T. vinegar
  • 1 pint sour cream
  • 2 T. flour
  • 1 bay leaf, optional

Brown pork steaks in a heavy Dutch oven. Add onion to the steaks. Let cook until onion is clear. Add salt, pepper and paprika, to taste. Let simmer for a few minutes. Cover with water and let cook until pork is about half done. Shred cabbage and add to pork. Let cook until cabbage is done. Add vinegar. To sour cream, add flour and this mixture to the pork and cabbage. Let simmer a few minutes more. Serve with mashed potatoes. A bay leaf may be added to the pork and cabbage while it's cooking.
